Laser Surfacing Welding vs TIG Welding for Mold Repair

Laser Surfacing Welding vs TIG Welding for Mold Repair

Compared with conventional TIG welding, laser surfacing welding offers lower heat input, minimal deformation, and does not usually require preheating or post-weld treatment. These advantages make laser welding especially suitable for high-precision mold repair applications.

TIG Welding Characteristics

TIG welding generates a relatively large amount of heat because both the workpiece and filler material are melted directly by the welding arc. This process provides fast welding speed and strong bonding strength.

However, the high heat input can easily cause workpiece deformation, residual stress, secondary undercuts, and excess burr formation. As a result, additional machining, EDM processing, and finishing work are often required, increasing both repair time and overall cost.

TIG welding is also less suitable for repairing very small or narrow areas such as pin-shaped tips, groove bottoms, side walls, and internal corners.

Advantages of Laser Surfacing Welding

Laser surfacing welding uses pulsed laser energy to create a highly concentrated point-like heat source. Because the heat-affected zone is extremely small, the surrounding material experiences very little distortion.

This process allows operators to repair molds while observing the weld area through an integrated microscope. By continuously adjusting the focus of both the microscope and the laser beam, extremely precise weld placement can be achieved.

Laser welding is especially effective for repairing narrow grooves, small holes, inner corners, fine edges, and delicate mold details that are difficult to repair using TIG welding.

Laser Welding for Plastic Mold Repair

Although laser surfacing welding is generally slower than TIG welding when large repair volumes are required, its precision can significantly reduce subsequent machining and polishing work.

For plastic injection molds that require dimensional accuracy and minimal heat distortion, laser welding is often considered one of the best repair technologies available.
