Carbon-Based Mold Coating for Bottle Cap and Preform Mold Release

Carbon-based mold coating technology provides a very smooth surface and significantly reduces friction during injection molding and demolding. Its relative dry friction coefficient is typically only one-fourth to one-eighth of conventional surfaces, making it especially suitable for packaging industry applications such as bottle cap molds and preform molds.

In these applications, improved surface smoothness helps parts release more easily from the mold and also increases wear resistance of the tooling surface.

1. Why Low-Friction Mold Surfaces Matter

During injection molding of caps and preforms, demolding can be difficult in threaded areas such as bottle cap screw necks. If the mold surface friction is too high, the molded part may stick during ejection, leading to unstable release, surface damage, or reduced production efficiency.

A carbon-based coating helps lower friction on the mold surface, making stripping and demolding smoother and more reliable.

2. Suitable for Bottle Cap and Preform Molds

This coating technology is especially useful for packaging molds used to produce bottle caps and PET preforms. These products often require fast cycle times, smooth thread release, and stable mold performance over long production runs.

By reducing friction and improving wear resistance, the coating helps support longer mold life and more consistent molding performance in high-volume production.

3. Reducing or Eliminating Mold Release Agents

In some bottle cap molding applications, the threaded area of the part is not easy to release from the mold. Traditionally, mold release agents may be considered to assist demolding. However, for food-grade packaging products, using external release agents can create safety and compliance concerns.

Carbon-based mold coating provides a cleaner solution by improving the mold surface itself, which can eliminate the need for mold release agents in many applications.

4. Benefits for Packaging Mold Performance

Applying a carbon-based coating to packaging molds can provide several practical benefits:

  • Lower friction during demolding
  • Smoother mold surface finish
  • Improved wear resistance
  • More reliable bottle cap thread release
  • Reduced dependence on mold release agents
  • Better suitability for food-grade packaging production

For bottle cap and preform molds, this makes carbon-based coating an effective surface treatment option for improving both mold performance and production cleanliness.
