World Cup Trophy, How to Make Trophies?

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has drawn worldwide attention, and the World Cup trophy itself has also become a topic of interest. Beyond the tournament, many people are curious about how trophies are made and what manufacturing processes are involved.

The FIFA World Cup Trophy is about 36 cm high and weighs approximately 6.2 kg. Its main body is made from 18-karat gold, while the base includes two layers of malachite. It is one of the most recognizable trophies in the world, but in daily life, trophies can be produced from many different materials and by several different manufacturing methods.

In this article, we look at several common types of trophies and how they are typically manufactured.

1. Metal Trophies

Metal trophies are commonly made from materials such as stainless steel, copper, iron, or other metal alloys. They usually consist of a base and a main decorative body. Common manufacturing processes include metal spinning and metal casting.

Metal spinning is usually a cold-working process. Different spinning methods include CNC spinning, manual spinning, hydraulic-assisted spinning, and hot spinning. This process is often used to form flat metal sheets into bowls, cups, round bases, and similar shapes.

Metal casting is a thermal process that uses molds to create more complex shapes, especially statues and decorative forms that cannot be produced easily by spinning. The metal is melted at high temperature, poured into a mold, and then cooled and solidified. After that, the parts can be assembled and surface-finished as needed.

Metal trophies can also go through a variety of finishing processes such as electroplating, painting, and polishing, which give them a more refined and decorative appearance.

2. Crystal Trophies

Crystal trophies have become very popular in recent years because of their elegant appearance and high-end visual effect. They usually go through multiple processing steps, including cutting, pressing, rough polishing, fine polishing, drilling, engraving, sandblasting, bonding, inspection, and packaging.

After these processes, the finished product presents a transparent, bright, and smooth appearance. Under different lighting conditions, crystal trophies can produce attractive visual effects, which is one of the reasons they are widely appreciated.

3. Acrylic Trophies

There are generally two common ways to produce acrylic trophies. One is to cut acrylic sheets using dedicated equipment, and the other is to make a mold and use acrylic raw material for injection molding. Since acrylic trophies are often produced in relatively small quantities, cutting and secondary processing are more commonly used.

Main production processes for acrylic trophies include cutting, engraving, polishing, bonding, silk-screen printing, and UV printing. These processes help create a clean, transparent, and visually appealing finished product.

4. Wooden Trophies

Wooden trophies remain popular because of their natural grain, texture, and warm visual appeal. Different trophy parts are cut from raw wood according to the product design, and the bases may be rectangular, square, circular, oval, or custom-shaped.

After cutting, the surface finishing process usually includes sanding, polishing, varnishing, printing, or coloring. In many ways, the finishing methods are similar to those used in furniture manufacturing.

5. Resin Trophies

Resin is a practical material for making lighter, more detailed, and more cost-effective trophies compared with wood, metal, or acrylic. When a transparent appearance is not required, resin can be an excellent choice.

Resin trophies are typically produced through molding, and many are hand-painted after molding. With improved mold-making technology, resin products can now capture finer details and more complex textures. This makes resin suitable for decorative trophies, figures, and award products.

In addition to these common types, some trophies are also made from glass or other synthetic materials. Different materials and manufacturing methods are selected based on the design, budget, required appearance, and production quantity.
